Pioneering R&D for more efficient and competitive electrolysis
Pioneering R&D for more efficient and competitive electrolysis
In a global context where green hydrogen is consolidating its role as a cornerstone of the energy transition, achieving the deployment targets set requires overcoming significant technological challenges. Hydrogen, as an energy vector, plays a key role in decarbonizing industrial sectors and strengthening energy independence and security.
At Matteco, we are tackling this challenge head-on through cutting-edge R&D projects focused on developing advanced catalysts and electrodes for Alkaline and AEM electrolysis. Our clear goal: to improve the efficiency, durability and cost-effectiveness of electrolysis to produce sustainable and affordable green hydrogen. These are some of the strategic projects our team is currently working on.
MATCATH 2.0
Matteco PGM-free Cathodes for Next Generation H₂ Production
European Innovation Council – EIC Transition
Duration: May 2025 – May 2028
Total funding: €2,415,000
MATCATH 2.0 aims to advance Matteco’s innovative thermal reductive catalyst activation process for large-scale production of PGM-free cathodes. The project will move towards TRL 6 through rigorous quality control and extensive testing under real operational conditions to validate the cathodes’ exceptional performance and stability with end customers.
This technology supports the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (CHJU) 2030 targets, positioning Matteco as a key partner in Europe’s roadmap towards decarbonization and the circular economy.

SEAL HYDROGEN
Stable and Efficient Alkaline Water Electrolyzers with Zero Critical Raw Materials for Pure Hydrogen Production
Research Innovation Action – Horizon Europe
Duration: January 2024 – January 2027
Total funding: €3,000,000
Project Partners: University of Valencia, Horiba, HI-ERN, Siemens Energy
While Zero-Gap Alkaline Water Electrolysis (AWE) offers a promising pathway thanks to its scalability and cost-effectiveness, further optimization is needed in terms of activity, stability and gas crossover to maximize system efficiency and lifetime.
SEAL HYDROGEN is pioneering a new generation of conventional alkaline electrolyzers, combining the robustness of classic systems with state-of-the-art innovations in materials science, catalyst design and process engineering. A step forward to democratize the production of pure hydrogen without relying on critical raw materials.
EMMA
Next Generation Electrodes in More Efficient Electrolyzers for Green Hydrogen
Spanish strategic recovery plan (PERTE) for Renewable Energy, Renewable Hydrogen and Storage (ERHA) – EU Next Generation
Duration: July 2024 – July 2027
Total funding: €1,400,000
Project Partners: Ariema Enerxía
Through EMMA, Matteco will integrate its high-performance electrodes into Ariema Enerxía’s next-generation alkaline electrolyzers. The goal is to produce green hydrogen more efficiently and at a lower cost, boosting the competitiveness of this technology in strategic markets.
The joint work focuses on developing durable, high-performance components and ensuring scalable, sustainable manufacturing processes.
STELAH
High Efficiency Alkaline Electrolysis Stack for Producing Renewable Hydrogen
IVACE+i program – Valencia Innovation Agency
Duration: July 2024 – July 2027
Total funding: €903,513.17
Project Partners: Técnicas Reunidas, University of Valencia, Instituto Tecnológico de Producto Infantil y Ocio (AIJU)
STELAH aims to design and validate more efficient and scalable catalysts and electrodes – both anode and cathode – for integration into next-generation alkaline electrolysis stacks. The project combines research on advanced materials with optimized stack configurations to deliver higher efficiency than currently available systems.
Among its objectives, STELAH will identify optimal materials for catalysts and substrates to improve electrode durability and electrochemical performance, reduce dependence on precious metals such as iridium and platinum by using more sustainable alternatives, and develop innovative methods for cost-effective and reproducible catalyst deposition.
PADIH
Referencia: 2025/DIH_01/000177
Entidad concedente: Escuela de Organización Industrial (EOI)
Base Reguladora: Orden ICT/1296/2022
