Two years may seem brief in the timeline of an industrial transition — but for Matteco, they have meant the leap from world-class laboratory science to industrial deployment, strategic partnerships and global market traction.
Today we celebrate not only an anniversary, but the people, institutions, partners and customers who have made this journey possible.
What began as the industrialization of more than a decade of scientific research has become a company manufacturing advanced materials that are already contributing to the competitiveness of renewable hydrogen on three continents.
This is our balance of the past two years — and the platform for what comes next.
What We Set Out to Build
Matteco was founded with a clear mission:
to accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy through innovation in advanced materials that make clean technologies scalable, competitive and resilient, and hence build a better future for all
We are not just a hydrogen company —we are a materials innovation platform building the foundation that makes clean hydrogen, and much more beyond, possible.
Our purpose is anchored in five principles:
- Innovation as a constant strategic priority
- Sustainability through reduced dependence on critical precious metals
- Scientific excellence
- Collaboration with leading industrial and academic partners
- Social and industrial impact in the regions where we operate
Renewable hydrogen is our first market — not our limit.
Two Years of Milestones and Acceleration
In only two years, Matteco has:
- Transformed university research into industrial products
- Begun integration with leading electrolyzer manufacturers in Europe, North America and Asia
- Built its Modular Advanced Materials Factory in Paterna, Spain, designed for modular industrial production, ready to scale up in volumes and product sizes as demand grows
- Bring together a growing team of more than 50 people across science, engineering, manufacturing and business
- Attracted a solid funding base combining mission-aligned private investors and enabling public funding
- Earned national and European recognition for technological innovation and industrial potential
Each achievement brings us closer to what matters: real-world impact on the cost, performance and decisive scaling of clean hydrogen.
Technology Shaped by Industrial Reality
The catalysts and electrodes that we are creating are based for instance on next-generation layered double hydroxides (LDH) and other materials engineered to deliver:
- Outstanding performance at industrial operating conditions
- Long-term durability
- Competitive cost structure without dependence on critical metals
- Manufacturing processes designed for high-volume production
This is innovation not “for the lab”, but for the factory, the project and the field.
Co-Engineering With Industry Leaders
A key differentiator of Matteco’s approach is how we work.
We do not simply ship materials — we develop them together with our customers, co-engineering performance targets, testing protocols and industrial validation stages to maximise:
- durability
- superior efficiency
- cost per kilogram of hydrogen
- total system lifetime value
This joint roadmap ensures that our innovation becomes a real advantage where it matters most: in our customers’ products and projects.
Industrial Scale Made in Europe
Matteco is entering a new phase of industrial growth and is in the process of commissioning its Modular Advanced Materials Factory in Paterna (Valencia, Spain).
The site has been designed to be scalable through the use of modular production lines. This enables us to:
- Focus on our commercially available AEM anode solutions –catalyst powder and full electrodes– and further develop our pre-commercial solutions: Alkaline anode and cathode, as well as our AEM cathode.
- Ensure digital traceability and rigorous quality control
- Contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy in clean-tech manufacturing
We manufacture locally, but deliver globally.

A Strong and Balanced Financial Foundation
Matteco’s development is supported by a funding base that reflects investor confidence and technological relevance:
Equity: €15M in private investment by mission-aligned family offices supporting industrial growth and international deployment.
Public funding: €8.3M already awarded through European, national and regional competitive programmes.
This combination demonstrates credibility, solvency and the ability to execute at scale — today and in the years to come.
Deep Commitment to R&D with Major Industry Players
No industrial transition is achieved alone. Matteco is working with leading organizations in technology, academia and industrial development, participating in major competitive programmes such as:
- EIC Transition – MATCATH 2.0 project
- Horizon Europe – SEAL HYDROGEN project, with Siemens Energy, Horiba, HI ERN and the University of Valencia.
- PERTE from the Spanish Government/Next Generation Funds, – EMMA project, in collaboration with Ariema.
- IVACE – STELAH project, with Técnicas Reunidas, AIJU and UV
These partnerships drive faster testing, stronger validation and accelerated technology deployment.
A Team Built for Science, Scale and Industry
In just two years, Matteco has grown into a multidisciplinary organization of over 50 people, bringing together:
- World-class materials scientists
- Industrial and chemical engineers
- Operations and production teams
- Business and market development professionals
Beyond employment growth, we are building an industrial ecosystem dedicated to high-value innovation.
Culture matters — and ours is based on:
- scientific excellence
- agility and ownership
- diversity and equal opportunity
- work-life balance
- long-term development of talent
Because people build the future of deep-tech.

Recognition That Reflects Impact
Matteco’s work has already been acknowledged with national and European distinctions such as:
- Decarb Connect Europe – Next Gen Award
- BASF-ICIQ Innovation & Entrepreneurship Award
- Cinco Días Award for University-Linked Innovation
- Finalist – Future Unicorn Award 2025 by Digital Europe
- Recognized by the Valencian Regional Government as a Strategic Industrial Project for our contribution to skilled employment, local investment, and the development of a cutting-edge technology industry.
These recognitions emphasize the industrial relevance and market positioning achieved in just two years.
Winning Through Collaboration
We also contribute actively to key platforms shaping the European hydrogen and clean-tech landscape:
- Hydrogen Europe
- European Clean Hydrogen Alliance
- Cleantech for Iberia

We don’t just operate in the market —we help shape how the sector evolves.
Looking Ahead: Building a Global Materials Platform
As we mark our second anniversary, we continue moving forward with the same clarity that defined day one:
- industrial scale is underway
- new technologies and applications are advancing
- partnerships with global players deepen
- international expansion is already happening
Two years down the road, our ambition is clear:
To become a global leader in advanced materials enabling the transition to a net-zero economy.
Thank you to everyone who has joined us on this journey.
This is just the beginning of what we will build together.
Because the future of clean energy will not be defined only by new systems — but by the new materials that make them possible.
New materials for a better future.
